Why a well-designed logo still matters, and what makes one stick

The strongest logos tell simple stories. Here is how a mark sets the foundation for your entire visual identity, and five practical rules for getting it right.

Simple stories, lasting marks

The most recognizable logos in the world share one trait: simplicity. They cross cultures and languages. You know the brand from a street corner, a shoe, or a screen: without reading a word.

As designer Sol Sender put it: "The strongest logos tell simple stories." What is yours? A bold, fast-moving company might lean toward sharper geometry and a strong palette. A community-focused organization might choose softer colours and rounded forms that feel open and welcoming.

Your logo is only one piece of a brand: but it is the anchor everything else hangs from. See how that plays out in practice on projects like Vesta Legacy Planning and DCS Safety Consulting.

// Foundation

The base of your visual identity

Before you lock in a final mark, pressure-test it across every touchpoint where it will live:

Website & digital Header, favicon, social profile icon, email signatures: the mark needs to read at every size.
Print & collateral Business cards, letterhead, pop-up banners, vehicle wraps: colour and detail that hold up in physical production.
Colour & typography The logo sets the palette and type direction for every brand element that follows.

Five rules that save rework later

Keep it simple Less is more. Complexity does not survive small sizes or busy backgrounds.
Skip fancy fonts If the typeface is hard to read at a glance, it fails as a logo wordmark.
Build two versions If you use a tagline, create a primary lockup and a compact version without it.
Test the icon Does a simplified mark work as a social profile image? If not, simplify further.
Work on any background Light, dark, photography: your logo should hold up without a fixed colour box around it.
